Credit Repair Companies
Obtaining credit when faced with an unfavorable credit report can be difficult, if not impossible. Other issues associated with a poor credit rating can range from setting up utilities accounts to securing employment. In addition, a poor credit rating can last for a number of years and may take a great deal of time and effort to restore. Even so, credit restoration is certainly possible and there are a number of steps that you can take to put yourself back on the road to becoming credit worthy.
Credit Repair Methods
Although credit restoration can be accomplished, it should be noted that restoration will not occur overnight. A serious effort needs to be made combined with perseverance in order to achieve a clean slate. You can proceed with the necessary steps on your own or you can enlist the services of a credit repair company. Legitimate credit repair services go a long way in alleviating a lot of time and effort that you would normally spend when repairing your credit report.
If you decide to move forward on your own, you will need to become aware of what all three credit bureaus are saying about you. This is important to understand since credit card companies, for example, are not required to report to all three credit bureaus (TransUnion, Experian and Equifax). Because of this, they may report to only one of them, while others may report to all three.
This will tell you that the three credit bureau reports are not all exactly the same. This is a very important thing to realize, since just checking one or two of the reports could result in a serious oversight. Fortunately, you are allowed to obtain a free copy of your credit report from each bureau once every year. You may also request a report if you have been denied consumer credit or employment. Otherwise you will have to pay for each report. The cost will vary depending on the state that you reside in.

Check Your Credit Reports Carefully
You need to pay close attention to the details of your credit report, once you receive your copy. The information contained in your reports is never verified and will be listed according to information received from your creditors. If you have decided to use a credit repair company, this step will be unnecessary, since they will do this for you. But if you’re doing this yourself, make a list of anything that is inaccurate and proceed to challenge the inaccurate information. This can be done by either filling out a form that is supplied with the report or by drafting your own letter. You should include a copy of the report with any inaccuracies circled along with any supporting documents or files (make a copy of the supporting documents for yourself). It’s also a good idea to send the dispute letter and files by registered mail. You will usually receive an answer within 30 days. If an item is proven to be incorrect, it should then be removed from the report.
You should also take note of good credit that you possess that has not been reported to the bureaus. Insufficient credit history can also cause denial of credit. You can try requesting unreported granters to send a report of your good credit details to the credit bureaus.
Protecting Your Credit
If you continue to find inaccurate information on your credit report, you may want to issue a fraud alert on your credit report. This extra security measure can help a lot if it turns out your identity has been stolen.
If you discover that your identity has been stolen, there are additional security measures you can take to protect your credit. Along with issuing a longer fraud alert, you can also issue a credit freeze.
Also, be aware of who does and does not have access to your credit report. Some companies have direct access to your credit report (such as companies you are receiving credit from), where others do not have direct access to your credit report (such as companies pre-approving you for their services).
Repairing Your Credit
You can also improve your credit standing by using guaranteed bank cards. This is a form of credit card that is backed by funds that you have placed into an account. These cards are available to those who are in the process of repairing their credit or who lack the credit needed to obtain a standard credit card. Other steps that you can take while repairing your credit (or building up your credit rating) can include:
- Don’t make several credit applications at once. Lenders will see this as a desperate measure.
- Make sure that everything listed on your credit report has your correct name and address.
- Make sure that no other person is listed on your credit report.
- Close all unused lines of credit.
- If you are divorced, inform the credit agencies if your former spouse has a bad credit rating.
- If you choose to find help from a credit repair company, research for the ones that won’t scam you to prevent worsening your credit.
- Be aware that credit searches done for credit applications can lower your credit score.
- Always pay your creditors on time.

As mentioned earlier, it may take a while to repair a bad credit report. But by working on the items mentioned above, along with a good credit repair company, you can reduce the amount of time needed to make repairs to your credit report.
