The Long March Project in New York City as part of PERFORMA 07!

OCTOBER 27 – NOVEMBER 20, 2007

As a prelude to upcoming events in March 2008, Asian Contemporary Art Week is proud to invite you to attend The Long March Project presentations as part of PERFORMA 07, the second new visual art performance biennial. As the first major representation in New York the Long March Project – a Beijing-based multi-platform international arts collective, this exciting program will launch a number of performances and panel discussions, which are specifically designed to question the exhibition and interpretation of Chinese art in a city with entrenched ties to China.

Please join, participate, and witness upcoming PERFORMA programs across some of New York City’s most renowned art institutions including China Institute, The Studio Museum in Harlem and Museum of Chinese in the Americas!

Long March-Xu Zhen, In Just a Blink of an Eye
At James Cohan Gallery

Leading conceptual artist Xu Zhen will produce In Just a Blink of an Eye at the James Cohan Gallery. Two performers, migrant workers from Chinatown, will appear in an empty room, frozen in time and space, and tilted at an impossible angle, as if ready to topple over.

Qiu Zhijie, Long March Project-The Thunderstorm is Slowly Approaching 2007

The Thunderstorm Is Slowly Approaching, by the artist Qiu Zhijie, takes the traditional Chinese dragon dance as a starting point for investigating the pressures to hide national identity within a ‘host’ culture, in a festive public gathering in Chinatown. Slowly Approachingincludes installation, performance, video, and a ceremonial ten-member dragon dance team, wearing a costume made from camouflage.

Long March Collective, Avant-Garde with Lu Jie, Qiu Zhijie and more
At China Institute

Long March founder and curator Lu Jie, artist Qiu Zhijie, and artist Ingo Gunther moderate a dialogue about avant-garde and performance art in both individual and public contexts. The collaborative end-product of the workshop will be a physical march, during which participants walk backwards and in double-file from China Institute, through the public lobby of the Museum of Modern Art, culminating at Times Square.
